HIKES

The thing I love most about off-roading is the exploring of all the wonderful places most people could only hope to see. I guess it should be no suprise that my family and I really enjoy hiking too. Below are links to a few of the hikes we've done while on our trips that I think you would enjoy.

Trips & Digital Photo Gallery

Yes, my wife and I are shutter bugs. For me, I grew up with parents in the photo business and my wife... I don't know, but I'm sure glad she's as hooked as I am. For over eight years now, I have been using a digital camera to capture all the wonderful places we've been to. My first digital camera was a Sony Mavica FD-91 and man was this thing ever awesome for it's time. Heck, with a 14X optical zoom lens and a ton of other amazing features, I would still be using it today if it only had better resolution. Today, I use a Sony Cybershot DSC-F707 with a true 5.24 Megapixle resolution and my wife is now using the upgraded F717. Of course, there are higher resolution cameras available today but in my humble opinion, these still do the trick well enough.

This gallery is updated with every trip I make so be sure to come back to check it out from time to time.

Desert Wildflowers Trip 2005
Anza Borrego Desert, CA

03/20/05

Unlike our previous trip a few weeks back, we decided to look for a better and less crowded location to camp and see all the wildflowers blooming in Anza Borrego. Well, after doing a little research online, I found that a small area just off S-2 and south of highway 78 called supposed to be heavily in bloom right now and so that's where we decided to start our trip.

Desert Wildflowers Trip 2005
Death Valley, CA

03/12/05
Now, I've been coming out to Death Valley National Park since I was a kid and over the last 10 years, I've been coming out on a more regular and frequent basis. During this time, I have never... and I mean never, seen this place look so amazingly beautiful.

Coyote Canyon & Wildflowers
Anza Borrego Desert, CA

03/05/05
I don't know why, but every time I come out to Anza Borrego, it always seems to rain. Not a lot of rain mind you and certainly not enough to keep you at home but defiantly enough to be annoying for sure. Having said that, all this rain has turned the Anza Borrego desert into a beautiful garden of wildflowers, which is in fact the reason why we came.
Soda Mountains - Mojave Desert, CA
02/26/05
Oh my dear God, with all the rains we've been having here in Southern California during the early month of 2005, the entire Mojave Desert has been transformed into a world I have never seen before in my lifetime. All the dry lakes were completely full, everything was green and there were flowers everywhere! Need I say, my family and I decided to take make every opportunity to head out to the Mojave Desert every single weekend we could this year to enjoy this once in a life time experience and on this particular trip, we explored the Cronese and Soda Mountains.
Kelso Dunes & Bristol Mountain Wilderness
Mojave Desert National Preserve

02/05/05
The Kelso Sand Dunes are located in the Mojave National Preserve near the I-40 and is about four hours away from the Los Angeles area. Pretty much any vehicle can access these dunes as virtually all but 4 miles of the trip can be done on pavement. To make thing a little more interesting for us, my family and I decided to leave the pavement early, do some exploring along the way and reach the dunes by cutting through the Bristol Mountain and Kelso Dunes Wilderness Areas.
Cady Mountains - Mojave Desert, CA
10/09/04
Of all the places my family and I like to visited and camp in the Mojave Desert, the Cady Mountains is by far one of our favorites. Located about 40 miles east of Barstow, CA., this amazingly colorful and alien landscape lies between the I-15 and the I-40 on BLM land. Over the years, we have explored miles and miles of this mountain range by foot and by Jeep and yet, we still feel like we've only scratched the surface of discovering all the wonderful treasures this place has to offer.
Tahoe August 2004
08/15/04 - 08/20/04
Once again, my family and I were able to find some time and head up to one of our most favorite places in California.... Lake Tahoe. This trip would be the 6th year in a row that we been able to come up to this majestic place and I can only thank God and the generosity of Gil and Jackie (Cindy's parents) for making it possible. I also want to thank Mark Anderson for taking us out on the lake in his awesome boat. It has been an especially difficult year with all that's been going on at Marina Ranch and at work so you can be assured that this vacation was well needed!!
Sunflower Springs Road
East Mojave Heritage Trail
& Lost Arch Inn

11/09/03 - 11/11/03
Venture into one of the most remote regions in California by taking a trip out to the Mojave Desert. On this trip, we explored the Old Woman, Piute, Stepladder and Turtle Mountain Wilderness.
Main Divide Road
10/10/03

Separating Riverside and Orange County is a mountain range know as the Santa Ana's. Most of it resides within the boundaries of the Cleveland National Forest and it has amazing views, plenty of hiking trails and even a few dirt roads you can explore. One such road traverses along the ridge top of this range and it is called the Main Divide or Main Divide Truck Road.
Lassen/Tahoe July 2003
07/06/03 - 07/12/03

Every year for the last five years, my family and I have taken a trip up to Lake Tahoe, California (sometimes even a couple of trips) and this year was no exception. Unfortunatly, we are still in the process of moving and extra effort was needed to make it happen at all. Needless to say, our trip was a last minute kind of thing and we weren't able to get any wheelin in this time. We were however able to make a special detour to see Lassen National Park and visit my mom up in Chico, California.
Bryce/Zion Utah Trip Spring 2003
04/25/03 - 04/27/03
Well, I know this took a while to get up on my website but between work and packing, it's difficult to find time to much else. Anyway, over spring break, my wife and I decided to take a trip out to Bryce Canyon and Zion National Parks to do some hiking. Unfortunatly, we didn't have enough time to do any wheeling but here are a few pics from our trip.
Thanksgiving Death Valley
Echo Canyon/Funeral Mountains Trail

11/26/02 - 11/29/02
As an on going tradition, my family and I decided to spend our Thanksgiving weekend exploring the back trails of Death Valley. This year, we trekked across the Funeral Mountains through Echo Canyon and were joined by my in-laws their 1998 Isuzu Rodeo. If you've never been to Death Valley, this is a great "non-tourist" destination. There are three sections along the way that are a little technical and would not advise this trail to be traveled by a newbie alone or in a low clearance 4WD vehicle like a Honda CRV or Subaru Forester.
Annual Sierra Nevada Fall Trek
10/04/02 - 10/06/02
This year we decided to head up to the Coyote Flats area which is approximately 1.5 hours southwest of Bishop. While there, we camped two nights at Baker Creek and had a lot of fun exploring the snow covered trails in the area.
Tahoe Summer - Trip 2
08/18/02 - 08/27/02
I don't know how we swung it, but this was our second trip up to Tahoe in the same summer. Once again, we did a lot of hiking on this trip but did manage to get a run up the Strawberry 4x4 trail where we lost a tire. What a bummer especially since it only had about 4,000 miles on it.
Tahoe Summer - Trip 1
07/09/02 - 07/18/02
I think it's safe to say this is now a family tradition. Every year for the past few years, my family and I head up to Tahoe, CA and stay with my in-laws at the Tahoe Beach & Ski Club. This year, we also made a side trip and visited my mom who lives in Chico, CA. Although we spent most of our time hiking, we did find time to run the Deer Lake Trail (adopted by the Mudsucker 4x4 Club) and explored various other trails around the Sierra Buttes area. Let me tell you, it is mucho fun up there.
Miller Jeep Trail 2002
05/05/02
This is a trip I try to put together at least once a year and this was by far the largest group we've had with 10 vehicles of all makes and models. We had 2-TJ's, 3-ZJ's, 1-XJ, 1-VehiCross, 1-Rodeo, 1-Trooper and 1-4Runner. Fortunately, we only had two minor trail casualties (as opposed to the tipped XJ last year) this time around. The first was Sam's way awesome Rodeo early on which pinched a brakeline and the second was George's ZJ which just died at the end of the ride and fortunately back on pavement and at a gas station. Special kudos go to Alex for his expertise and awesome XJ, Brian for his natural knack at off-roading and Chris and his amazing monster of a ZJ!
